Colour temperatures are measured in Kelvins. A higher Kelvin rating does NOT mean you will have a bulb with a higher light output. Kelvin describes the colour of the light. LED bulbs of a higher Kelvin may appear brighter due to the higher contrast the cooler light provides but often of similar light output.
Refer ‘Lumens explained’ for a description of how light output (brightness) is measured.
Lumens the measurement of the light output from an LED luminaire. Put simply, lumens measures the brightness of a bulb. The higher the lumen number the brighter the light will be.
To replace a 100-watt incandescent bulb, look for a bulb that gives you about 1600 lumens. If you want something dimmer, go for fewer lumens; if you prefer brighter light, look go for more lumens.
- Replace a 75W bulb with an LED bulb that gives you approx 900-1000 lumens
- Replace a 60W bulb with an LED bulb that gives you approx 700+ lumens
- Replace a 40W bulb with an LED bulb that gives you about 400-450 lumens
There are two types of bulb bases, which can cause confusion when shopping.
The two most common bulb base types are
- E27: Also referred to as Edison Screw
- B22: Which is commonly referred to as bayonet cap
An IP rating is a grading that is applied to lighting to help buyers understand their suitability for installation in different environments.
IP Stands for Ingress Protection. The rating is formed by two numbers. The two numbers refer to two separate levels of protection:
The first digit shows the level of protection against solid objects.
The second digit indicates the level of protection of against water.
It is important to evaluate a fixtures IP rating when installing luminaries to ensure they are suitable for the environment intended.
Refer the IP chart or send us a message via chat to and we are happy to discuss suitability with you directly.
